Vine Covid Response Volunteer Sharing

I was paired to serve a refugee family, of whom I think are from India originally. Prior to meeting them I tried to find out more about refugees from India on the internet. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of information available and many of the news reports I found were hostile and unfriendly.

However, upon meeting them I was filled with joy, and I was delighted to tell the father of the family that these are presents from Jesus! I experienced the sweetness of joy and peace every time after delivery. In addition to getting the task done, I think God wanted me to observe their living condition, to care for their needs and to understand their culture. God wanted me to love them from their perspective.

God loves both parties, those who serve and those being served. He blessed me through my acts of service. I am a person that worries a lot and this usually brings me fear, but in even carrying out the simplest of tasks, His Spirit was glad to go with me. God had revealed to me that He will take care of everything, and I only need to follow Him.

I had the honour of serving a family of two in Yau Ma Tei. I was made aware of the every day difficulties they deal with, and how vitally important it is that I stay aware and willing to help. One highlight was when the donated items finally arrived (after a delivery delay and following up etc.) and the family sent me photos of the delivered items and expressed their gratitude.

Throughout the experience I learnt more about God's compassion, and how practical He is. He cares about every detail of our daily lives.

"What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." — James 2:14-17
